Privacy policy.
Last updated 22 September 2026. This policy explains what gps.so does — and does not — collect when you use the site.
Short version
Your photos and GPS tracks are processed in your browser. We do not operate an upload endpoint for those files, and we do not store them on our servers. Usage analytics (page views) may run in production. Map basemap tiles are loaded from a tile provider when you use a map.
Who we are
gps.so (https://gps.so) provides browser-based photo and GPS workflow tools. There are no user accounts on the site today.
Files you select in the tools
When you drop photos, tracks, or folders into a tool, those files are read and processed locally in your browser (including in a Web Worker where applicable). We do not receive copies of your photos or tracks through the application. Downloads you create (geotagged copies, stripped copies, GeoJSON/KML, and similar) are generated on your device and saved through your browser's download flow.
Originals on your disk are not modified in place by the tools; you receive output copies or exports.
What we may collect
- Website analytics. On the production site we may use Google Analytics 4 to understand traffic (for example pages visited, approximate location derived by Google from IP, device/browser type, and referral information). Analytics is not loaded in local development or typical preview deploys. Analytics does not receive your photo or track file contents.
- Server and host logs. The host that serves the website may automatically log standard request metadata (such as IP address, user agent, and requested URL) for security and reliability. Those logs are controlled by the hosting provider's practices.
- Map tiles. When a tool shows a map, your browser requests basemap tiles from a tile service (for example a Protomaps-hosted API or a self-hosted PMTiles URL we configure). Tile requests are separate from your photo files.
Cookies and similar tech
Theme preference may be stored locally in your browser (for example via a document attribute you set with the theme toggle). Google Analytics, when enabled, may use cookies or similar identifiers as described in Google's privacy policy. We do not use advertising cookies on gps.so.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal data.
- We do not run accounts, profiles, or a user database for the tools today.
- We do not upload or permanently store the photos and tracks you process in the tools.
Third parties
Production analytics (Google) and map tile providers process data under their own policies when those services are used. Review their documentation if you need details on retention and international transfers.
Children
The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
We may update this policy as the product changes (for example if we add accounts or paid features). The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
